Dr James Carmichael

James Nathaniel Carmichael – a graduate of both the University of Sheffield (UK) and the University of the West Indies – is an academic with extensive experience and research output in the domain of speech measurement and classification using digital signal processing techniques; his other research interest lies in the area of internet-based information retrieval (IR) technologies.

Prior to his service as associate professor at various universities in the United Arab Emirates, Dr. Carmichael participated as a software engineer in several EU-funded speech technology and web-based IR projects, including the MultiMatch and OLP initiatives.

Currently, James is collaborating with his second alma mater, the University of Sheffield, to develop software for the automated diagnosis of speech disorders. In his current tenure at the University of the Bahamas, Dr Carmichael teaches both computer science and Spanish while simultaneously focusing his investigative effort in the area of generative Artificial Intelligence and its impact on the education sector.

This academic is the recipient of several awards for his creative writing, research publications and – last but not least – his unswerving commitment to teaching excellence, as evidenced by James copping the 2012 Teaching Excellence Award from the AlGhurair University of Dubai (UAE).
